Konomie opened his winning account in emphatic fashion today, producing an impressive turn of foot to race away with the Dean Mills Plumbing Maiden Handicap over 1250m.
Beautifully ridden by Mollie Fitzgerald for trainers Annabel & Rob Archibald, the three-year-old son of Wild Ruler travelled comfortably through the early and middle stages before Fitzgerald brought him into the clear approaching the business end of the race.
Once balanced up in the straight, Konomie quickly put the result beyond doubt. He accelerated strongly when asked and powered away from his rivals to score by an authoritative 3.29 lengths, stopping the clock at 1:13.30 on the Soft 5 surface. Atadcheeky filled second place, with Raguel narrowly behind in third.
Jockey, Mollie Fitzgerald was thrilled with the performance – “I just peeled him out and he went past them very comfortably. He had a good look around in the straight but he went to the line pretty uncontested. It’s really exciting and he will take nice confidence from today.
After showing ability at trackwork in his two-year-old year without converting in two starts at the races, he was gelded during his last break in the paddock and it seems to have had the desired effect. He has returned a better horse who still has plenty to learn in his race craft but today’s demolition win, suggests he is now beginning to put things together.
By Group 1-winning sprinter Wild Ruler from the Capitalist mare Madame Louvre, Konomie was purchased by Triple Crown for $120,000 at the 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. On the strength of the way he put his rivals away today, there should be further improvement and more wins to come as he progresses through the grades.
Congratulations to trainers Annabel & Rob Archibald, jockey Mollie Fitzgerald and all the winning owners of Konomie.
