Triple Crown Syndications’ star sprinter Mazu has once again proven his class and courage at the elite level, producing a superb performance to finish a very narrow third in Saturday’s Group 1 Galaxy (1100m) at Rosehill.
In a blanket finish, the seven-year-old gelding was beaten just a half head by Marhoona, charging home with his trademark speed and tenacity. After travelling strongly throughout, Mazu dug deep over the final 100 metres, showcasing his trademark grit and determination to fight right to the line in one of the season’s most competitive sprints.
It was another outstanding effort following his equally impressive first-up run two weeks earlier in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) at Royal Randwick, where he also finished third – again beaten only a half head – behind Generosity in a thrilling finish.
Prepared to perfection by Joe Pride, Mazu has returned this preparation in terrific order, reaffirming his status as one of Australia’s most consistent and durable elite sprinters. Leading jockey Rachel King has partnered him in both runs this campaign and was full of praise post-race on Saturday, declaring that the Group 1-winning son of Maurice still has another major victory in him this autumn.
With his latest placing, Mazu’s career prizemoney has now surpassed an extraordinary $10.7 million, further cementing his position as one of the most successful horses to race in Triple Crown colours. Albeit, he still has a way to go to chase down the $16.4m in prizemoney earned by Triple Crown’s 2-time The Everest winner, Redzel.
A fan favourite and a model of consistency at the highest level, Mazu continues to provide his ownership group with an unforgettable ride, and based on his current form, it’s clear there are still more big moments to come.
